Recycling & Mobile Phones | Richard Tanfield-Johnson Date: Feb. 13, 2009 |
Boris Johnson, the mayor of the Capital is spearheading a campain to improve recycling in London. The campaign is being headed up by a new downloadable recycling game, that people can play on their mobile Phones. The game, in which Players are challenged to starve their "evil bin" by catching recyclable materials in a green recycling box, can be downloaded by texting BIN to 62967. The game can be downloaded for the iPhone from Apple's iTunes store. Users will be able to forward the game to friends. It will work on most internet-ready mobile phones. It does not work on BlackBerries. The aim of the new mobile phone game is to drive home recycling initiatives. Currently, more than 60 percent of the rubbish thrown away in the Capital can be recycled but the city is currently achieving a 20% recycling rate. The London mayor was cited by reporters as stating that: "In London we throw away so much rubbish that could actually be recycled - it's an important resource which is simply being chucked away," In reference to the Mobile Phone game, Mr Johnson was cited as being very excited that the new recycle for London campaign is using innovative technologies to get the message accross. He went on to say that he had confidence in the recovery of the recycling market- where some sectors had seen a downturn due to a drop in resale prices. London Waste and Recycling Board member, Councillor Daniel Moylan, said: "In addition to reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill, increasing recycling rates is our main priority and we shouldn't let a few scare stories in the media divert us from this important endeavour." The campaign, for the first time, will be advertised in the media, inlcuding local television, radio and newspaper adverts. Posters, that most Londoners are familiar with, will be placed on London Buses and Taxis.
